Celtic’s 2-1 win over St Mirren was another tough match. The Hoops dominated possession and had plenty of chances in the game. But it took a late goal to secure the win and the three points. The match as it unfolded gave more opportunities to players to show what they could do. David Turnbull seemed out of contention for a while beforehand but was chosen to start. His opening goal showed why.

Turnbull’s ability to find the goal from outside the box was one way to break down a tight defence. Perhaps he needed to take the penalty he missed from further out!

Luis Palma did well, with some nice touches and moves, until he was substituted early in the second half. He was unlucky not to see his follow-up to Turnbull’s penalty go in, outdone by a great save from the keeper. Yang Hyun-jun came on in his place and looked much sharper and more positive than he has in recent games. He came close to scoring too and boosted his selection chances for future games.

But taking the headlines was Oh Hyeon-gyu. That’s always the case if you score what turns out to be the winning goal. His quick feet and powerful strike in the 83rd minute were impressive as he found a way past the St Mirren keeper to make it 2-1 and seal the three points.

There was a great quick touch play from Odin Thiago Holm to slip the ball to Oh for the goal. The midfielder was another substitute who did well when he came on.

Brendan Rodgers was naturally pleased with the result and the way some players performed. He did particularly point out Oh. It can’t be easy for the young forward to have to do with cameos off the bench, while Kyogo plays as the first choice. As reported by TBR Football, the manager told Celtic TV:

"“I’m really pleased for him.“For the guys who aren’t playing so much, you always have to recognise and acknowledge their efforts, which I do with them.“He looks after his body, his diet, everything is superb. He’s so professional, he looks at his training and he knows when asked upon he can come in and make an impact.”"

Oh’s goal and ability to hold the ball up will keep him in contention. He showed composure in scoring and it will help boost his confidence. He still seems like a raw talent at times, but the opportunity is there under Rodgers to continue his development and to keep scoring important goals.
