It is no secret that Celtic have already dealt with a number of injury problems this season and continue to do so. The latest one was a problem suffered by Reo Hatate in the game against Atletico Madrid, which looks set to have ruled him out for the rest of the year. That is a major blow for the Hoops to say the very least. On the other hand, there is some positive news for Brendan Rodgers on the fitness front.

Celtic were scrambling for options at centre-back not too long ago. But now, it feels like they might even have too many options there.

Cameron Carter-Vickers and Liam Scales seem to be the settled starting duo at the moment. The club did shell out a combined €8.5 million to sign Gustaf Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki over the summer. Nat Phillips is also at Parkhead, on loan from Liverpool, for the first half of the season. And now, Rodgers will soon have another centre-back available.

Stephen Welsh clearly impressed Rodgers earlier on in the season and it led to him agreeing a long-term contract extension with Celtic. But he also suffered an injury, which has kept him out of action for quite some time.

Celtic player returns to training in major injury boost

As reported by the Daily Record, Welsh has given Celtic a fitness boost by returning to training. The Scottish defender has rejoined Rodgers’ first-team squad this week.

While Welsh might be back soon, it is hard to see where he will get playing time from. Carter-Vickers is widely considered the best defender at the club and the leader at the back for the Hoops.

On the other hand, Scales has been superb this season and is pretty much an undroppable right now. One would have to think that there would be more of a requirement to give minutes to summer signings Lagerbielke and Nawrocki.
