Celtic have had an interesting season so far. They got knocked out of the Scottish League Cup early and are winless in their first three games in the Champions League group stage despite putting in impressive performances. On the other hand, the Hoops do have a commanding lead at the top of the Premiership table although it was cut down to five points this weekend as they could only manage a goalless draw against Hibernian while the Rangers got a late win vs Hearts.

Overall, Celtic fans will be satisfied with the start to the season if not delighted. On the other hand, though, there is a need to recognise that there are some areas where the club do need to improve in January.

The team has done well but some weaknesses are apparent. And they need to be taken care of, especially if the Rangers do end up going on a good run following the appointment of Philippe Clement.

Frank McAvennie has backed the club to make signings in January. And it looks like he views left-back and centre-back as potential positions of need.

As reported by Football Insider, McAvennie said:

"“No disrespect to any of the players, the likes of Greg Taylor, Anthony Ralston but I think we need a good left-back, one that can defend as well as go forward.“I think if Nawrocki comes in and does not come in and hit the ground running then we need a new centre-half. Phillips is going back in January so I think a centre-half and a left-back at the very least.”"

It remains to be seen what kind of approach the Hoops will end up taking in the upcoming winter transfer window. But the fans will be hoping for, and expecting, some fresh faces to be brought in now that the squad is a bit settled following the arrival of Rodgers and he knows what he needs to add to this team.

Bringing in a left-back would be a good idea, with Alexandro Bernabei pretty much out of the picture at this point. On the other hand, it is hard to see the club signing another centre-back after splashing out a combined €8.5 million on transfer fees for Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke in the summer window.
