Celtic have done a pretty good job in recent times when it comes to identifying top talents. It is not just the players that they have been able to sign like Kyogo, Matt O’Riley, Reo Hatate, Cameron Carter-Vickers and more but also those who they have missed out on. Names like Ivan Toney, Kaoru Mitoma and a few others come to mind immediately. It looks like it might be time to add to that list.

There was an expectation this summer that the club would sign another left-back. Greg Taylor’s form had been inconsistent while Alexandro Bernabei does not seem to have much of a future at Parkhead, to be honest.

One player they were linked with is Quentin Merlin of FC Nantes. Most fans might not have been familiar with the French youth international but it looks like he could be on the verge of a big move in the near future.

As reported by Foot Mercato, RB Leipzig have contacted FC Nantes to find out the availability of Merlin. Napoli and PSG have shown interest in him as well.

So, it looks like the youngster is a top young talent and if Celtic had been successful in signing him over the summer, it could have been a major boost for the Hoops. They did not end up doing so though and it feels unlikely that Merlin will end up at Parkhead anytime soon considering the clubs which appear to hold an interest in him.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for the left-back spot at Celtic Park. The good news is that Taylor has improved a lot as the season has progressed.

On the other hand, there has been no progress in the situation of Bernabei. In fact, he does not even make the matchday squads anymore and a Parkhead exit looks inevitable.
