Major Celtic problem clear in game against Hibernian

Celtic had been superb in the league for a long time. So the fans cannot really be too unhappy with the result against Hibernian. At some points, the club are bound to drop points and most understand that. But then, that does not mean that the Hoops can or should overlook their problems when things do not go their way.

Brendan Rodgers was criticised for his substitutions against Atletico Madrid in midweek. And it is safe to say that the changes made against Hibernian were not exactly the most inspiring either.

The Northern Irishman brought on players like David Turnbull, James Forrest, Mikey Johnston, Oh Hyeon-gyu and Anthony Ralston. None of them have a recent history of having an impact on games.

What other options does Rodgers have though? This is the hand that he has been dealt. The names who remained on the bench spoke volumes as well. Yang Hyun-jun, Nat Phillips, Tomoki Iwata and Scott Bain. That is not the most impressive list of substitutes, to say the least.

At the end of the day, Celtic had a lot more attempts than Hibernian. But they simply could not break the opposition defence down and find the back of the net.

While Rodgers has been on the receiving end of criticism for his substitutions lately, he does not really have a quality bench to pick from at the moment. Celtic do not have any lack of players at the moment. In fact, one could argue that the squad is too big.

Having quality depth is different from having a lot of options though. This is the direct result of signing too many youngsters all together. Such additions always come with a risk. Some work out, others don’t. Unfortunately, many have not for Celtic lately. That has left them with a lot of players but not enough capable of coming on and making an impact, if things are not going their way.
