In hindsight, a 2-2 draw against an in-form Atletico Madrid team is a pretty good result for Celtic. There were many who felt they should have won the game though. The Hoops took the lead twice, first through Kyogo Furuhashi and then through Luis Palma, with both scoring absolutely world-class goals.

Atletico Madrid were the better team in the second half but Celtic were handed a lifeline when Rodrigo De Paul got sent off. But by then, Brendan Rodgers had made quite a few defensive substitutions and they were not in a position to push forward and get the win.

Overall, it was a good performance and result. Getting anything from the games against Atletico Madrid would have to be considered as such. And if the Hoops can get something away in the Spanish capital as well, they would have given themselves a chance in the group.

Marcos Llorente is someone who has played in some of the best and biggest stadiums in the world. He came through the youth ranks at Real Madrid and has gone on to establish himself as a star for Atletico Madrid. He seemed to have been impressed with both Celtic and the Parkhead atmosphere.

As reported by Glasgow Times, Llorente said:

"“Celtic had a great first half. They pushed up and were lifted by the atmosphere in the stadium. It was very difficult for us.”"

At the end of the day, it proved to be another ‘nearly there’ story for Celtic. But the progress that this team has made over the past few months is clear for all to see.

Not many would have predicted that they could get a result against Atletico Madrid when they were struggling early on in the season and were even knocked out of the Scottish League Cup in the second round. Now, they need to get results in the remaining three games in the Champions League group stage. Let’s see what happens.
