It is funny how quickly outlooks can change in football. Heading into the last few days of the summer transfer window, it had seemed like Celtic were in desperate need of making some signings. At that point, there were a number of positions where Brendan Rodgers’ squad seemed very light.
Just two months later, the picture is very different. In fact, it looks like Celtic have too many options and there are more players set to return in the coming weeks and months from spells on the sidelines due to injury.
Thus, the club could be more busy with departures than usual in the upcoming January transfer window. Some could leave on a permanent basis while a few others could do with spells out on loan.
As reported by The Scotsman, Celtic’s next transfer dealings could involve up to eight players in the January window. Rodgers admitted last week that “the squad is too big, that is the reality of it.”
Eight players could leave Celtic in January window
It is easy to point out the players who might need to head out on loan or on a permanent basis this January. Kwon Hyeok-kyu and Marco Tilio arrived in the summer but neither of them has played a single minute of football for the club since then.
Yuki Kobayashi seems to be pretty much out of Rodgers’ plans as well, especially with so many options at centre-back. And Nat Phillips looks likely to head back to Liverpool when his half-season loan spell comes to an end.
David Turnbull and Mikey Johnston are two who have been on Celtic’s books for years and still do not seem to be close to a regular place in the starting XI. Thus, leaving might be the best option for them. And someone like Odin Thiago Holm could do with a loan spell, as it looks like Paulo Bernardo has moved ahead of him in the pecking order.
