Celtic have been home to some of the best players of all time. As football has changed over the years, it has become almost impossible for the club to bring in the greatest in the world in their prime. But they have still managed to give the start to a few while also bringing some legends to Glasgow in the twilight of their careers.

One modern-day great of the game who first properly introduced himself on the European stage at Celtic is Virgil van Dijk. When the club signed him from FC Groningen, he was a bit of an unknown to most fans.

It did not take long for him to show his quality though. It was quite clear from the very beginning that he was a special player. But even then, not many would have predicted the heights that he would go on to reach in the game.

Van Dijk has won every trophy possible with Liverpool, is considered by some as the greatest centre-back in Premier League history and he also came very close to winning the Ballon d’Or a few years back. That is a stellar career to say the very least.

Richards names former Celtic player in all-time list

As reported by 67 Hail Hail, Micah Richards named Van Dijk in his top ten Dutch Premier League footballers of all-time as he told MOTD Top Ten:

"“You saw him, even when he was at Celtic, I knew he was going to be a star. I just knew it. He was effortless. Another player who came out with the ball. Fast. Strong.”"

Van Dijk is certainly someone who has earned his place on that list. And at 32 years of age, one would think that he still has quite a bit of football left in the tank.

Van Dijk is the captain of Liverpool now after Jordan Henderson left the club in the summer. The way Liverpool are playing right now, it would not be a surprise to see the Dutch legend lifting some silverware in the near future.
