The life of a footballer is always uncertain. One injury can change the course of one’s career and maybe even bring an end to it. Unfortunately for one former Celtic player, that has turned out to be the case as he has had to walk away from the game at just 29 years of age after failing to recover from a knee injury.

Darnell Fisher came through the youth ranks at Celtic and made some appearances for the senior team as well. He was never really able to establish himself at Parkhead though.

Fisher would ultimately leave Celtic and find a spot for himself in the English Championship. He ended up joining Rotherham United but only spent a season there.

Rotherham United were relegated from the Championship and he would end up joining Preston North End. After spending several years there, he moved to Middlesbrough. It was there that he suffered a long-term injury and has ultimately had to retire from the game at just 29.

As reported by Glasgow Times, Fisher said in a statement on his social media channels:

"“The time has come to hang my boots up due to my knee injury, I’ve tried everything to get back to full fitness but just not meant to be.“Thank you to all my team mates, clubs and the fans who have supported me over the years.”"

It was a sad ending to the career of Fisher to say the very least. 29 years of age is way too young for any footballer to have to walk away from the game for good.

But that is the uncertainty of life in football. One injury has ended up deciding the fate of Fisher’s career on the pitch. Now, it will be interesting to see what he does off it.

Of course, many end up entering coaching after retiring, especially those who have had to retire earlier than they would have hoped. Let’s see what the future holds for Fisher. We can only wish him the best for whatever is to come.
