Celtic hero gives superb reply to Todd Cantwell’s dig
Chris Sutton and Todd Cantwell have had their fair share of exchanges since the midfielder’s arrival at Ibrox earlier this year. Of course, the former Celtic striker is renowned for his wit and sharp takes, which have made him a popular pundit after retiring from the game. And it is safe to say that the Rangers player was never going to come out on top.
It had looked like the matter had settled down before Cantwell recently branded Sutton an ‘attention seeker’. There was never a doubt that the Celtic hero would come back with a response sooner or later, and now, he has.
Cantwell had shown a lot of promise early on in his career while breaking out at Norwich City, but it is safe to say that things have not quite worked out for him as well as expected. And Sutton wanted the Rangers player to do his talking on the pitch.
As reported by the Daily Record, Sutton said on the ‘It’s All Kicking Off’ podcast:
"“The thing I don’t understand, I genuinely don’t understand, is that there is that old adage in football of ‘do your talking on the pitch’.“I think at this moment in time, he’s away with the fairies! I really do. The sort of frustrating thing is that for someone who to date has had a bang average career, he doesn’t half have a high opinion of himself. The truth is he’s he’s better known for his social media presence, being on TikTok, than he is for what he’s done on the pitch. If I was him, I’d want to address that. He needs to focus on his football.”"

Cantwell was signed by the Rangers while Michael Beale was the manager of the club. There has already been a change in the Ibrox hot seat though, with Philippe Clement arriving recently.
It will be interesting to see if Cantwell is in Clement’s short-term and long-term plans. The midfielder had made a bright start to life at Ibrox but his form has seemed to fade away with time. He has also failed to make much of an impact in the big games. Unsurprisingly, the club’s supporters have started to criticise him by now, while it had been all praise the first few months after his arrival.
Just for comparison, Sutton had a fantastic career in the game. He won several trophies at Celtic, was the 2003/04 PFA Scotland Players’ Player of the Year and is considered as a club legend. Also, he won the Premier League with Blackburn Rovers, playing a central part in that triumph. A few years later, he won the Golden Boot in the English top flight. A failed transfer to Chelsea does not mean that the striker did not have a successful time down south.
