It would be safe to say that things change very quickly in football and it does not take long for careers to completely turn around. We have already seen this more than once since the arrival of Brendan Rodgers for a second run as Celtic manager. The first unexpected contract extension that the club handed out was to Stephen Welsh.

The Celtic academy graduate was widely expected to leave in the summer after never really managing to establish himself in the team. But it looks like he was able to impress Rodgers in pre-season and earn himself a new deal as a result.

Now, it looks like it could be the turn of another centre-back to get an unexpected new deal. Of course, that is none other than Liam Scales.

Many thought it was a bit of a foregone conclusion that Scales would depart Celtic in the summer. He had spent the previous campaign out on loan at Aberdeen and done well.

Celtic had signed not one but three new centre-backs over the summer, while Carl Starfelt had left. Gustaf Lagerbielke and Maik Nawrocki were brought in on a permanent basis while Nat Phillips was signed on loan for the first half of the season.

A series of injuries at centre-back did open up the chance for Scales to get some playing time and probably prevented him from leaving in the summer. He has taken the opportunity with both hands to say the very least.

Scales has been fantastic at centre-back for Celtic this season and it is hard to imagine that Rodgers would drop him back to the bench anytime soon if he can keep performing like this. As a result, it might be time to hand the former Shamrock Rovers player a new deal.
