It would be safe to say that Michael Beale’s run as the manager of the Rangers proved to be a failure. He came in with a lot of expectations surrounding him and the tag of ‘the mastermind’ who had helped the Ibrox club to their Premiership triumph a couple of years back. Celtic won the treble last season and they were seven points ahead of their Glasgow rivals by the time the Englishman was shown the exit door following a 3-1 defeat to Aberdeen.

There was a lot of hype surrounding Beale when he arrived at Ibrox. He had left QPR to take the Rangers job. And it was believed that he had turned down Premier League clubs in the past.

Beale was believed to be an elite manager by many. And yet, he did not even last a year in the Ibrox hot seat, did not win a trophy with the club and there are question marks over the signings he made this summer.

Former Manchester City player and popular pundit, Micah Richards, has given his take on where things went wrong for Beale. As reported by 67 Hail Hail, he said while speaking on The Rest is Football Podcast:

"“It’s a strange one for me because Michael Beale was talked about as a great coach.“When he was at QPR ‘was he staying? Or was he going?’ And he was at Aston Villa with Steven Gerrard. I thought with the way his teams played, on the front foot and the way he spoke in interviews. I thought he would go there and have a real good success.“He got in a few squibbles with Chris Sutton on Twitter. He said something about Chris because Chris is Celtic and he is commenting on the games up in Scotland now.“He got drawn into that when perhaps he should have just focused on the football side of it. He put more pressure on himself, more than anything. Anytime he was in a press conference. They were picking out little words and the pressure was getting to him and all that sort of thing. I think he picked the wrong battles. He should have just concentrated on the way his side wanted to play.”"

Managing one of the Glasgow giants is much tougher than most people would expect. The goal is to win almost every game and even a draw leads to questions.

It is not a job that every manager can do. And even while Beale was part of Steven Gerrard’s coaching staff at Ibrox, they only won one trophy in over three years. It was not a grand success by any stretch of the imagination.

It remains to be seen where Beale’s career goes from here. He might have to rebuild his reputation at the English Championship level once again.
