Celtic can’t find a way to win in the Champions League. Whether they play well or badly, the Hoops always seem to find a way to lose in Europe’s elite competition. The recent game against Lazio at Parkhead was the perfect example of that. Maurizio Sarri’s side came into the contest on a bad run of form and this looked like a winnable match for sure.

Celtic ended up dominating for the most part as well and should have won the game. Instead, they conceded two avoidable goals, one deep into added time, to hand Lazio all three points.

It was the same old story for Celtic in Europe. While the result was disappointing, it should not have come as a surprise to anyone to be very honest. We have seen this movie time after time, where the Hoops have found ways to not win games at the Champions League level.

Things clearly need to improve at this level. And it looks like Stiliyan Petrov did not agree with some of Brendan Rodgers’ recent comments.

As reported by the Daily Record, Petrov said:

"“I strongly disagree with Brendan’s talking about development, this is the Champions League. What Champions League game, this is something you have to be ready for. This is what the club demands, and those players have played together long enough. Developing in those games? It don’t stand for me.”"

The one thing stopping Celtic from making any meaningful progress at the Champions League level is their transfer policy. The club rely heavily on bringing in highly-rated youngsters and hoping that they turn out to be superstars in the future.

Many of them are not ready to perform at the Champions League level from the get-go. By the time they are, they are often transferred away and the cycle goes on.

As a result, Celtic never really have a squad that is ready to take on the Champions League challenge. Most fans wanted them to bring in proven players in the summer to make an impact on the group stage.

They did not and unsurprisingly, the results have not improved. The writing is on the wall, they look set to finish bottom of their group once again.
