It is safe to say that the Rangers have struggled to find the right manager for a long time now. Many view Steven Gerrard’s run at Ibrox as a success but the fact of the matter is that he only won one trophy in nine attempts. Giovanni van Bronckhorst showed early promise but lasted just a year in the hot seat. And Michael Beale could not even reach that milestone. Now, a former Celtic player has been mentioned as a possible solution for them.

Following their 3-1 defeat at the hands of Aberdeen at Ibrox, the Rangers fell seven points behind Celtic in the league. As a result, whoever the next manager is will have a mountain to climb to get back into the title race.

Names like Kevin Muscat, Pascal Jansen, Graham Potter and many others have been linked with the vacant Rangers job. But David Martindale believes that the answer could very possibly be closer to home.

As reported by Football Scotland, Martindale reckons Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes or Ross County boss Malky Mackay could do a job for the Rangers as he said:

"“Derek and Malky are two top, top managers.“I think anyone of those two could do a job at a club the size of Rangers or Celtic. I don’t get carried away with these foreign names that are so-called better coaches…there’s an abundance of managers within Scottish football and English football that could do a job.“Sometimes we get it in our heads we have to look elsewhere for some fantastic skillset that someone has marketed well from foreign shores. I just namechecked two there. Derek is one of the best in the league and Malky is a top, top manager.”"

Of course, Mackay spent several years at Celtic during his playing career. He has been the Ross County manager since 2021. In the past, he has managed teams like Watford, Wigan Athletic and Cardiff City.

McInnes, on the other hand, already has a connection with the Rangers, having played for them. One has to admit that he is doing a decent job at Kilmarnock all things considered and was the Aberdeen manager for almost eight years before that.

Thus, both Mackay and McInnes have quite a bit of experience under their belts. But it is hard to see the Rangers going for either of them as their next manager.
