Celtic are currently leading the Premiership title race once again, as they sit two points clear at the top of the table. St Mirren sit at second while the Rangers are four points behind Brendan Rodgers’ side. One also has to take into consideration that the Hoops have not made a great start to their campaign and stumbled out of the gates, before finding their feet in recent weeks. Thus, that gap could increase further moving forward.

Celtic have been the dominant team in Scottish football for more than a decade now. They have won 11 of the last 12 league titles.

The only manager who has been able to stop them from winning the league is Steven Gerrard. And that has seen him being painted by many as a big success at Ibrox. Everybody might not have that same view of the Englishman’s time as the manager of the Rangers.

As reported by the Daily Record, while speaking on the ‘It’s all Coming Up’ podcast, Ian Ladyman and Chris Sutton had a closer look at Gerrard’s run at Ibrox and the former Celtic striker said:

"“What, one trophy out of nine? Was that success? St Johnstone won more trophies in the period Steven Gerrard was there. You said he was a huge success, one trophy out of nine, is that a success? He stopped Celtic’s 10-in-a-row and did well to do that. But to say he was a huge success…”"

It would certainly be a big stretch to describe Gerrard as a big success as a manager in Scotland. Yes, he stopped Celtic from winning 10IAR but that was pretty much it when it comes to the list of his achievements at Ibrox.

St Johnstone won more trophies than the Rangers during Gerrard’s time as the manager of the club. That says a lot.

Gerrard would ultimately leave the Glasgow club in the middle of the 2021/22 season in order to move to the Premier League and join Aston Villa. It did not take long for things to go south there and he was shown the exit door. Right now, he finds himself at Al-Ettifaq.
