Celtic have done a very good job in recent times when it comes to agreeing new deals with some of their most important players. Kyogo Furuhashi, Callum McGregor, Daizen Maeda, Liel Abada and Stephen Welsh have all put pen to paper on contract extensions. Talks are rumoured to be taking place with Reo Hatate and Matt O’Riley as well.

The hopes were that those two would be next to extend their deals with the club. But amidst all this, the club have made somewhat of an unexpected announcement this afternoon.

As reported by the club’s official website, Anthony Ralston has signed a new four-year deal with Celtic. It will see him remain at Parkhead until 2027.

Ralston is the cover option for Alistair Johnston at right-back. And with the Canadian’s recent fitness issues, the Celtic youth graduate has played quite a bit of football lately.

Ralston’s career at Celtic had seemed to be on borrowed time not too long ago. It looked like he was destined to leave the club. But things took a turn following the arrival of Ange Postecoglou as manager.

Ralston got to play a lot of football early in Postecoglou’s run as manager with options limited in the full-back areas. He impressed during that period and produced some important moments as well, which proved to be vital in the title race.

Ralston joined the Celtic academy setup at the age of eight. So, it is always nice to see players like him have a career at the club and we can only wish him all the success moving forward.

Yes, it is unlikely that Ralston will ever be a regular starter for the club. But he certainly has an important role in the squad and has certainly held his own at right-back when given an opportunity.
