Celtic were pretty active during the summer transfer window, signing nine players in total. Seven of them arrived on a permanent basis while two are on loan. Almost all of them are viewed as ‘project’ signings though. They are youngsters with a ton of potential but you never know whether it will work out or not.

Celtic’s record when it comes to identifying talent in recent times has been decent. They were superb in Ange Postecoglou’s first season at the club, signing the likes of Jota, Kyogo, Reo Hatate, Matt O’Riley, Daizen Maeda, Cameron Carter-Vickers and many more.

Their transfer record in Postecoglou’s second season at Parkhead was nowhere near as good. The only success story has been Alistair Johnston while it remains to be seen how Oh Hyeon-gyu continues to develop. Of course, Aaron Mooy did great but he was already proven at the top level.

This current Celtic squad could do with some more proven players. Their inexperience was on full show against Feyenoord in the Champions League, as two of their summer signings, Gustaf Lagerbielke and Odin Thiago Holm, picked up very avoidable red cards.

Brendan Rodgers appears to drop Celtic transfer hint

Rodgers has appeared to drop a hint about Celtic’s transfer plans for the future. As reported by Sky Sports, the manager said:

"“Listen, if you look at the strategy of the club, it’s signing the younger players to develop and improve.“I think I have said it before here, that to maximise that potential, of course, you need that balance in your squad.“You need quality and you need experience, and that will obviously help and support potential that you have.“So that’s something that hopefully over the course of my time here the squad can regenerate into that way.”"

It remains to be seen what Celtic decide to do moving forward. There were a lot of rumours about them going after experienced players this summer as well. Ultimately, none of that ended up materialising.

One has to wonder whether the club tried to sign some established players and failed, or whether it was not in their plans at all. The most experienced player they brought in is Nat Phillips and even that was due to the injury problems that they are facing at centre-back at this point in time with several key players out on the sidelines.
