Ange Postecoglou makes emotional claim about Celtic
When Ange Postecoglou was appointed as the manager of Celtic, it is safe to say that most fans were not familiar with the Australian or his work. He had achieved success Down Under and in Japan but had never managed a top flight club in Europe. Naturally, there were doubts about the move and many supporters felt that the club had taken the easy way out.
For months, Celtic had been chasing the signature of Eddie Howe. It failed to materialise though and they quickly ended up appointing Postecoglou instead.
It proved to be an inspired move on their part. Postecoglou completely transformed the team. They went on to win the Premiership and League Cup double in his debut campaign in Glasgow, before clinching a historic domestic treble the next season.
That kind of success and his brilliant brand of football caught the eye of Tottenham Hotspur. Postecoglou would join the Premier League club just days after winning the treble with Celtic last season.
Postecoglou makes emotional claim about Celtic
As reported by Football Scotland, Postecoglou said while speaking to Gary Lineker for Football Focus:
"“I’ve got to thank Eddie Howe because that was pretty much done. At the end, Eddie, for a number of reasons, just didn’t feel comfortable taking the role. They’d gone so far down the path of him being appointed that it was really late.“Yeah, I did. I was looking forward to it because it was the bit that was missing. I’d had the success but I hadn’t had it in a place where I knew it could be impactful. I knew at Celtic if I had success there, it’ll mean something because I know what it means to the supporters. If nothing else, even just in Glasgow I’ll make an impact. I wanted to be in that environment. It was a moment. Me and my wife just sat there saying ‘It’s happening. At the age of 55, it was happening.”"
Postecoglou has been proving the doubters wrong in England since moving to Tottenham Hotspur. They have made a flying start to the campaign, despite seeing Harry Kane leave over the summer. They sit at second in the Premier League table at the moment and the Australian is suddenly the talk of the footballing world. His success will come as no surprise to Celtic fans though, who saw the same movie a couple of years back.
Celtic fans were disappointed when Postecoglou left. But at the same time, his decision was understandable. He has had nothing but great things to say about the club since leaving and we can only wish him the best moving forward.
