Celtic have a number of defensive issues at this point in time. Cameron Carter-Vickers, Stephen Welsh and Maik Nawrocki are all out due to injury. Nat Phillips rolled his ankle last weekend as well and is not available for selection, even though his issue is believed to be more short-term. And Gustaf Lagerbielke picked up a red card in the Champions League game against Feyenoord.

Celtic’s next Champions League game is in early October against Lazio. It would be a major help if one of the injured centre-backs returned in time to take part in that game.

Fortunately, it looks like there could be a possibility for Carter-Vickers to play in that match. As reported by The Scotsman, while talking to Sky Sports, Brendan Rodgers said that the American would be back in early October when asked for an update.

That would be music to the ears of Celtic supporters. Carter-Vickers is the best centre-back that the club have in their ranks right now. Thus, his return could completely transform this team.

To be fair to Celtic, they were doing pretty well defensively in recent weeks and had kept three clean sheets on the trot. But then things went south against Feyenoord.

Amidst all this, Liam Scales has emerged as a genuine option at the back. The youngster has impressed whenever he has been given a chance and now, he has to be Rodgers’ plans moving forward, even when the other centre-backs are back available.

The fact that Scales can also play at left-back could help him keep a place in the team. Greg Taylor has not been impressive this season and it does not feel like Alexandro Bernabei has a long-term future at Parkhead. Could the Irishman slot into the left side of the backline? Time shall tell.
