Celtic and Feyenoord share a much longer history than a lot of fans might realise. The two teams had met in the European Cup final back in 1970. Jock Stein’s side had already won the competition back in 1967 and had the chance to lift it again a few years later. Unfortunately, they came up short on that occasion as the Dutch club won.

Piet Romeijn started in that final for Feyenoord. And he has been recalling some events that took place on that trip to Milan, which showed the class of the Celtic fans.

Celtic fans gave the Feyenoord team a guard of honour outside of their hotel, despite losing the final to the Dutch side. It clearly had an impact on Romeijn, who still remembers that more than 50 years later.

As reported by 67 Hail Hail, the 83-year-old former Feyenoord player told De Telegraaf:

"“That was the guard of honour the next morning at the hotel that the Celtic supporters formed for us. They stood there and they all started clapping when we came out. What a nice gesture, what class you radiate.”"

The days of playing in the European Cup finals seem to be behind both teams, unfortunately. They have been drawn in the same Champions League group this season and either would be happy to just make it out of it into the knockout phases.

Of course, we could discuss about how football has changed over the years for hours. But there is not much point in dwelling on it. It is what it is. The memories and achievements remain.

This midweek, the two teams will meet each other at De Kuip. Anything other than a defeat would have to be viewed as a positive result by Celtic.

The other two teams in the group are Atletico Madrid and Lazio. Most people view those two teams as the favourites to go through to the next round. The Italian club have not made a good start this season though and currently sit 14th in the Serie A table. Thus, there might be a chance for either Celtic or Feyenoord to get that second spot.
