Ange Postecoglou explains why he left Celtic for Tottenham
Celtic were dealt a blow when Ange Postecoglou left the club, merely days after winning a domestic treble with the Hoops, in order to join Tottenham Hotspur. The lead-up to the Scottish Cup final had been dominated by rumours of his potential exit and the fans’ worst fears soon came true.
Postecoglou had proven himself as an incredible manager at Celtic. He arrived after the terrible 2020/21 season and completely transformed the team, and much quicker than anybody could have anticipated.
They would go on to win five trophies over the next two seasons and Postecoglou’s success caught the eye of Tottenham Hotspur. Celtic fans were unquestionably disappointed by the Australian’s exit, but most understood that it was probably his last chance to manage one of the Big Six in the Premier League.
Postecoglou has now explained what attracted him to the Tottenham Hotspur job. As reported by talkSPORT, he told White and Jordan:
"“I love a challenge. I’ve done that through my whole career.“Every step along the way I’ve decided when to move and I’ve usually moved on the back of success wherever I’ve been and that’s because there’s a challenge out there that really stirs me.“You’ve got to get asked, that’s the first thing and secondly you look at what you’re going into and I think that the fact that it is one of the biggest clubs in the world but hasn’t had success for a very long time is probably the key driver for me.“When you go into a challenge like that you know that, should you be able to implement the things that you want to and things go well, you can make a mark on the club you work for and that’s what I’ve tried to do at all of my clubs.“That was the biggest attraction for me, the fact that the club hasn’t had a lot of success and was coming off a particularly poor season by their standards and the opportunity to create something.”"
Postecoglou explains why he left Celtic for Tottenham Hotspur
Postecoglou has certainly made an impact since arriving at Tottenham Hotspur. Many had predicted that the club would struggle to finish in the Top 8 if Harry Kane left.
On the contrary, they have made a flying start to the season, are playing some beautiful football and sit second in the Premier League table at the moment. Naturally, their fans cannot stop singing the praises of Postecoglou. Of course, none of this will have surprised Celtic supporters. They have seen this movie unfold before their own eyes before.
To Celtic’s credit, they did go out and get the best replacement possible for Postecoglou, bringing back Brendan Rodgers. The Northern Irishman is a proven success in Scottish football. And after somewhat of an underwhelming start to the season, a win over the Rangers away at Ibrox has lifted the mood at Parkhead once again.
