Celtic have made an up-and-down start to this campaign. They won their first two games but the performances left a lot to be desired. Those were followed by a loss and a draw, which caused the fans to worry heading into the Glasgow Derby. But then, Brendan Rodgers’ side rose to the occasion and won 1-0 against the Rangers away at Ibrox.

Thus, the mood around Parkhead is positive again. And the team is only expected to get better when a number of their key players return from injury over the coming weeks and months.

One player who has been a particular standout under the management of Rodgers till now is Matt O’Riley. The Danish youth international has been an important part of this team since arriving in the winter transfer window of 2022 from MK Dons. But he seems to have taken his game up a level this season.

Joe Ledley certainly seems to be impressed with what he has seen from O’Riley. As reported by the Daily Record [09/09 print edition, page 58] (via 67 Hail Hail), the former Celtic player said:

"“I really like Matt. He’s been fantastic since he walked through the door. He had to try and adapt to the league and the expectation levels, but you can see in just four or five games this season, it’s obvious he’s gained a lot.“He controlled a game against Rangers at Ibrox and getting that goal against Aberdeen proves his creative side. If he can just add a few more goals, it’d be even better.“I was an attacking midfielder. Me and Scott Brown worked as he was deep lying and I could join the attacks. Matt has the same licence, especially with Callum holding. He knows he can go and is an all-round player.”"

Ledley player for three-and-a-half seasons at Celtic. He was an important part of the team that started the 9IAR run. He would ultimately leave in order to join Crystal Palace in the Premier League. He called time on his career in 2021.

O’Riley himself has been linked with a move away from Celtic in recent times. In fact, there have been suggestions that Leeds United made a late bid for him this summer.

But it was turned down by Celtic and thankfully so. It is hard to see another player in the team right now, capable of taking his place in the starting XI. If the early signs are anything to go by, it looks like the Dane might find the back more often this season under the management of Rodgers.
