Struggling Celtic player told what his biggest problem is
The departure of Ange Postecoglou and the arrival of Brendan Rodgers has naturally had an impact on a number of players. Both managers are known for their building winning teams, but the approach that they take to that is pretty different. And one Celtic player in particular seems to be having a tough time adjusting to the Northern Irishman’s system.
Greg Taylor was signed by Celtic in the summer of 2019 as a potential replacement for Kieran Tierney, who left in the same window. He was pretty unremarkable during his first two seasons with the club, never establishing himself as a regular starter.
Things would change for him under the management of Postecoglou though. The Australian’s style of football seemed to fit Taylor like a glove.
As a result, Taylor showed impressive improvement and was one of Celtic’s most consistent performances over the previous two seasons, as the club won five trophies during that period of time. But the Scottish international seems to have taken a step back since the reappointment of Rodgers.
Struggling Celtic player told what his biggest problem is
As reported by Football Insider, Frank McAvennie said about Taylor:
"“The biggest problem with Greg Taylor is that he keeps running in to midfield.“I do not know if that is Brendan’s style, I think it was Ange’s way I do not think Brendan wants to do the same.“I think he has got to curtail that because the manager will be wanting him to play on the outside rather than moving into midfield. He will have to defend more than he did under Ange.“"
Taylor thrived as an inverted left-back in Postecoglou’s system. The role seemed to fit him very well and he played the best football of his career as a result of it.
On the other hand, Rodgers seems to prefer chalk on the boots full-backs, who remain mostly on the flanks and maintain the width of the team. That does not seem to play to Taylor’s strengths.
There were heavy suggestions that Celtic would bring in another left-back this summer but that did not happen. So Taylor and Alexandro Bernabei are the two main options for Rodgers, while Liam Scales can play there as well. Let’s see who establishes himself as the regular starter.
