Celtic lost one of their most important players this summer in the form of Jota. The Portuguese winger was a key part of the successes that the Hoops enjoyed during the two seasons under the management of Ange Postecoglou. He was instrumental in all five trophies that the Scottish club won during that period of time and chipped in with a number of significant goals as well.
Celtic are clearly feeling the absence of Jota at the moment. The club have signed three wingers this summer in the form of Yang Hyun-jun, Luis Palma and Marco Tilio.
It remains to be seen if any of them is able to fill the void left behind by Jota. On the other hand, it looks like Celtic had to shell out a significant sell-on fee to Benfica, the Portuguese winger’s former club, as they had retained a clause.
As reported by Record, in the 2022/23 Report and Accounts released this Wednesday to the CMVM, Benfica detailed the net income it had with the transfer of Jota, from Celtic to Al Ittihad. With a 30% sell-on clause, the Portuguese club announced that it was entitled to an amount of €7.585 million.
Fee Celtic paid to Benfica for Jota’s Al-Ittihad move confirmed
Despite all things considered, Celtic still pocketed a significant transfer fee out of Jota’s move to Al-Ittihad. But they did lose a very good player at the same time.
The Hoops have not looked the same team this season. And a large part of that has to be down to them missing someone with the quality of Jota up front.
On the other hand, the move away from Celtic has not really worked out for Jota either. He has not found his feet at Al-Ittihad and there has already been speculation about him leaving the club.
