Celtic set to offer new contract to £10 million-plus player
Celtic added nine new players to their squad over the summer transfer window. It will be interesting to see how they do at Parkhead. Most of them might not be established names in the game but they certainly do appear to have a lot of potential. At the same time, it is important that the Hoops keep their best players as well.
It looks like Matt O’Riley will be offered a new contract at Celtic Park very soon after a promising start to the season. It has seen the Danish under-21 international start in all of the Hoops’ games until now.
O’Riley was at the very top of his game in Sunday’s 1-0 Glasgow Derby victory over the Rangers at Ibrox. He assisted Kyogo Furuhashi for the only goal of the game.
It has become evident that O’Riley has taken his game to a new level in comparison to the last campaign, which at times saw him in and out of the starting XI due to the form of Aaron Mooy. With the Australian retiring at the end of last season, the Dane wasted no time in cementing himself as a first-team starter, with goals in the first two games of the Scottish Premiership season against Ross County and Aberdeen.
Celtic set to offer new contract to key player very soon
Anthony Joseph tweeted that Celtic are expected to offer O’Riley improved terms and an extension on his contract. The club rejected a £10 million bid from Leeds United for him and now hope to sign him up on a new deal during this international break.
O’Riley joined the Hoops from MK Dons back in 2022 for a transfer fee believed to be around £1.5 million. His current deal runs until the summer of 2026.
With O’Riley’s current deal not expiring until 2026, this shows that the Celtic board and Brendan Rodgers view him as one of the most important players at the club currently. Let’s see if they can agree on a new contract or not.
O’Riley has looked a different player under the management of Rodgers so far this season, which is frightening for the rest of the Scottish Premiership. He recorded the most assists in the SPFL last season, despite limited game time.
O’Riley’s future at Celtic Park looks bright and he will undoubtedly play a large part in the Hoops’ Champions League campaign this season. It will be yet another great chance for the Dane to test himself against Europe’s elite.
