Celtic fans were delighted with the result at the weekend and understandably so. Going into the Glasgow Derby, there were not a lot of expectations as Brendan Rodgers’ team had made a stumbling start to the season and had not made any high-profile additions to their squad over the summer either. Thus. most would have been happy to come out of Ibrox with a draw.
Celtic put in a solid display on the day though. They were able to keep a clean sheet despite their makeshift backline and on the other hand, Kyogo Furuhashi’s goal proved to be the difference between the two Glasgow teams, as the Hoops won 1-0.
It is a result that should serve as a confidence booster for Celtic. And hopefully, it will bring their season back on track, after an early Scottish League Cup elimination and some underwhelming displays.
Not everybody was impressed with Celtic though. As reported by 67 Hail Hail, Alan Shearer said on The Rest Is Football show:
"“I think the standard from those two has certainly dipped in recent years.“I watched bits of it. Yeah the atmosphere was amazing but the standard of football wasn’t great at all.”"
Shearer criticises Celtic despite Glasgow Derby win
It was not the most exciting of Glasgow Derbies by any stretch of the imagination. But then, you should perhaps expect that at this stage of the season.
Neither team came into it in good form. Celtic had not won in their previous two games and did not look great in the two before that. On the other hand, the Rangers had been handed a 5-1 defeat by PSV in midweek in the Champions League qualifiers.
One would expect Celtic to improve from here on forward. It has felt like this team is still coming to grips with Rodgers’ style of football.
On the other hand, it is hard to see where the Rangers go from here. The majority of their fans seem to have made their mind up regarding Michael Beale and would like to see him depart the club as soon as possible.
