Most fans expected Celtic to sign a goalkeeper this summer, with there being major question marks surrounding Joe Hart and his suitability for Brendan Rodgers’ team. There were rumours linking them with a move for Dominik Livakovic, who would have been a great signing, but that did not end up happening. And with Benjamin Siegrist staying put as well, the club did not add to their ranks between the posts at all.
That did not stop them from being linked with a move for Kasper Schmeichel. The Leicester City legend recently left OGC Nice after his contract was terminated by mutual consent.
Many viewed Schmeichel as a good option for Celtic. He had already played in Rodgers’ system for several years during their time together at Leicester City.
Yet, it looks like a move to Parkhead is not on the cards for the Danish goalkeeper. As tweeted by Fabrizio Romano, Schmeichel will complete a move to Anderlecht today. It will be a contract until June 2024. The deal will be sealed in the next 24 hours.
Schmeichel agrees move amid Celtic rumours
Perhaps Schmeichel could have been good short-term competition for Hart. But then, there would be many of the same issues.
Schmeichel is 36 years of age as well and would not be a long-term solution between the posts. On top of that, he is not known for his ability with the ball at his feet.
At the same time, Hart deserves a lot of praise for the performance he put in against the Rangers at Ibrox, keeping a clean sheet on a day not many expected one. Hopefully, the display will give him a much-needed confidence boost.
To be honest, there might not have been much to the rumours linking Celtic with Schmeichel anyway. We can only wish him the best at Anderlecht.
