Celtic are not in an ideal situation right now, no matter which way you look at it. Brendan Rodgers had not lost a single domestic competition during his first stint at Parkhead. It took just three games for that streak to end this time around, as they were knocked out of the Scottish League. They have not looked great in their league games either and dropped points against St Johnstone at the weekend.
Thus, it is pretty clear that Celtic need to bring in reinforcements. Fortunately, it looks like the club are doing exactly that.
They have already completed the signing of Luis Palma from Aris FC. The Honduran winger is being viewed as the replacement for Jota, although those are some big boots to fill.
Now, it looks like Celtic have gotten a deal over the line for another player as well. And it is none other than Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips.
Celtic agree deal to sign Premier League defender
As reported by Celtic 365, the deal to bring Phillips to the club has been completed tonight. A medical seems to have been completed and the paperwork signed off.
This will be music to the ears of the club’s fans. It was very clear that they badly needed to sign another centre-back this summer, even though they had already brought in two in this window itself.
The issue is, they have four centre-backs out injured right now. The only two available to Rodgers right now are Liam Scales and Gustaf Lagerbielke. Tomoki Iwata can play there too.
Of course, Phillips has quite a bit of top-level experience. He did not look out of place when he was a starter for Liverpool a few seasons back, when they were going through a lot of injury problems. He also has spent time on loan at VfB Stuttgart and Bournemouth.
