Celtic have already signed a couple of centre-backs this summer in the form of Maik Nawrocki and Gustaf Lagerbielke, while Carl Starfelt departed the club. But the Hoops might still need to add another central defender to their ranks before the transfer window slams shut, as that position has been hurt the most by injuries.

Cameron Carter-Vickers, Stephen Welsh and Nawrocki are all out with medium to long-term injuries. One could argue that those are the three best centre-backs that Celtic have in their squad right now.

There have been suggestions that Celtic will look to sign another centre-back this summer. Whether they are successful or not remains to be seen.

Rumours doing the rounds online suggest that Ronnie Edwards of Peterborough United is someone who is on the radar of Celtic. The English youth international has been linked with the Hoops in the past as well and is believed to be rated at a transfer fee in the range of £4 million to £8 million.

Edwards is still just 20 years of age but is playing regularly as a starter for Peterborough United at the League One level. And he is very highly rated.

At the same time though, one has to wonder whether this is the profile of player that Celtic need right now. The club could do with some experience in the heart of defence, having seen Starfelt leave this summer.

When it comes to young centre-backs, they have already brought in two pretty good ones in this very window. Of course, it is part of their transfer policy to sign players before they reach their full potential and then move them on when the time is right. But if the club want to make an impact in the Champions League, they will need to bring in some established names.
