Celtic find themselves in a very difficult position right now. We are just three games into the season and they already have a substantial injury list. So much so that they might need to start players who would have been at the bottom of the pecking order in their respective positions if everybody was fit and available.

No position on the pitch has been affected more than centre-back. Celtic have four players out of action there.

Cameron Carter-Vickers, Maik Nawrocki and Stephen Welsh won’t be available for the foreseeable future as they picked up medium to long-term injuries. On the other hand, it remains to be seen when Yuki Kobayashi is available once again.

Considering the number of important games coming up, both in the Premiership and in the Champions League group stage, it would not be a surprise to see the club sign another centre-back before the summer transfer window closes. Could a loan signing be the solution to their problems?

Celtic have been linked with an interest in Eric Dier in recent times. Now, it is easy to see why many fans are uncertain whether the club would be able to pull off a deal of that magnitude.

Dier does not have a place in Ange Postecoglou’s team at the moment though. He will surely want to play regular football in order to be in contention for Three Lions, with EURO 2024 coming up. Thus, there might be a window of opportunity for Celtic to make something happen.

Dier has been a regular feature at Tottenham Hotspur and made more than 350 appearances for them, spending almost a decade at the London club. You simply don’t do that if you are not a quality player. Also, he is in his prime at 29 years of age.

A loan move to Celtic would give him the chance to compete for trophies and play in the Champions League. Also, it would not be a long-term commitment. Would Tottenham Hotspur let him leave on loan though, with just a year left on his current deal?
