Celtic are keen to get a few more quality players in before the summer transfer window ends. But there is also a fear that the Hoops may see existing top-quality and starting players leave before then too. There’s been concern all summer over whether Reo Hatate may be subject to a transfer bid but the Japanese midfielder’s current injury and recent drop in form might just be enough to put off any potential suitors for the time being.

Celtic have had to be firm over retaining another star midfielder this week though. The player in question is none other than Matt O’Riley.

As reported by The Scottish Sun, Celtic have rejected a bid from Bologna for O’Riley. The offer was quickly dismissed by the club chiefs. The Italian side are now deciding whether to return with a higher one.

O’Riley has been sensational since joining Celtic from MK Dons for a bargain £1.5 million transfer fee back in January 2022. He was quickly integrated into the starting lineup and has featured heavily ever since. The Danish youth international seems to have taken another step forward this season under the management of Brendan Rodgers and appears to have added more goals to his game.

Worryingly, there are suggestions that clubs from all over Europe are interested in O’Riley. Thus, more offers might come in over the coming week.

The pressure increases as the transfer window approaches its end. And the risk of losing great players heightens.

O’Riley leaving at this, or any, point would be a huge loss for Celtic. Especially with Champions League group-stage matches coming up and the squad needing time to settle again following a change of managers over the summer. It is great that the club are looking to sign more quality players but it is important to keep hold of the ones they already have.
