Reo Hatate arrived at Celtic in the January transfer window of 2022 and has been one of the best players in Scottish football ever since. The Japanese midfielder has proven to be a class apart and has not looked out of place even when playing in the Champions League. The start to life in the second Brendan Rodgers era has been difficult for him though.

Hatate is yet to start a game under the management of Rodgers. He was left out of the starting XI in the first two league games and then ended up picking up an injury when he was brought on against Aberdeen.

There is no doubt in most Celtic fans’ minds that Hatate will come good when he comes to grips with Rodgers’ system. And when the Northern Irishman understands how to get the best out of the midfielder.

There are fears that he could be on his way out soon though. Rumours broke out recently that Hatate has turned down a contract extension offer from Celtic. Similar news had come out about Josip Juranovic and Giorgos Giakoumakis in the past, and they left soon afterwards.

Anthony Joseph has given a more positive update on the matter. He tweeted out that Hatate has rejected the first offer from the club, but is open to negotiation. Talks are ongoing.

So, it is still possible that Hatate could end up signing an extension with Celtic. He just has not managed to reach an agreement with them at the first attempt.

Most Celtic fans would be hoping that Hatate stays on. He has not looked at his best under the management of Rodgers yet. But when on top of his game, the Japanese midfielder is capable of being a real difference-maker.
