Celtic have been linked with quite a few big names over the summer even though they are yet to make any high-profile additions to their roster. One of the more surprising rumours from this window has seen the Hoops being linked with a move for Kieran Tierney, who finds himself in an unenviable position at Arsenal.
Tierney has barely featured for Arsenal in recent times. He only made six starts in the Premier League last season.
The Scottish left-back was completely left out of the matchday squad in their season-opener against Nottingham Forest as well. But with Jurrien Timber suffering a long-term injury and Oleksandr Zinchenko facing his fitness issues lately, there were expectations that Tierney would start in their second match of the campaign.
That has not turned out to be the case. In fact, Mikel Arteta has started Takehiro Tomiyasu at left-back. The Japanese player is a right-back. And Tierney has not even been included on the bench.
Arsenal hand Kieran Tierney transfer boost to Celtic
Thus, considering how things are going for Tierney at Arsenal right now, it is hard to imagine that he has a future at the club. The problem for him is, exit routes are starting to close up as well.
He was linked with Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Real Sociedad over the course of the summer. But all seem to have turned their attention elsewhere by now.
That does open up a window of opportunity for Celtic, who could move in for Tierney with no real competition to deal with. Of course, signing the Scot on a permanent basis seems pretty much out of the question. He is believed to be rated at a transfer fee north of £30 million and with several years left on his deal, Arsenal are under no pressure to let him go immediately. But a loan move back to Parkhead might be a possibility.
