There’s still time for Celtic to sign more players this summer in order to boost their squad, as they attempt to defend the treble and make an impact in the Champions League group stages this season. And Brendan Rodgers appears to be trying to bring Kieran Tierney back to the club, in what would be a blockbuster reunion.
Some fans were unhappy with Tierney’s departure, but it is easy to understand the lure of the English Premier League and the numerous perks that playing in it brings. Rodgers himself left the club under far more controversial circumstances but has been welcomed back with open arms by most.
Tierney may have been attracted by the glitz and glamour of the Premier League, but on the football side, it hasn’t really worked out for him at Arsenal. Last season saw him make just six starts in the Premier League after the arrival of Oleksandr Zinchenko from Manchester City. And with the summer arrival of Jurrien Timber, he seems to have slipped further down the pecking order.
There is a slight shift in circumstances at Arsenal though with Zinchenko out injured and Timber now seemingly out for much of the season, if not all of it, with his recent ACL injury. Still, Tierney leaving before the summer transfer window closes seems like a real possibility.
Celtic boss pushing the club for Tierney return
According to TEAMtalk, Rodgers is pushing Celtic hard to bring back Tierney this summer. The Northern Irishman is asking his club bosses to negotiate terms with Arsenal for the left-back.
With fresh question marks over Greg Taylor and Alexandro Bernabei at left-back, Rodger does need to strengthen the position. Tierney would be an exceptional addition and bolster the backline significantly.
Arranging a deal won’t be easy though as Arsenal are believed to be looking for a transfer fee around £30 million for Tierney. That’s a figure surely well above the Celtic budget.
If serious about a move, the club would surely be hoping for Arsenal’s expectations to drop near the end of the transfer window. Tierney would have to take significantly lower wages as well, to make any deal possible. Perhaps a loan would make more sense than a permanent transfer?
