Celtic have made quite a few additions in the ongoing summer transfer window. One area of the pitch that has been in particular focus is central defence due to a combination of reasons. Carl Starfelt’s exit, the unconvincing performances of Yuki Kobayashi and the question marks over the future of players like Stephen Welsh and Liam Scales, have all played a part.

Celtic have brought in two new centre-backs to the club this summer. Maik Nawrocki has arrived from Legia Warsaw and Gustaf Lagerbielke from IF Elfsborg.

They are expected to compete over the spot vacated by Starfelt in the starting XI. Cameron Carte-Vickers looks set to hold onto his place in the team, although it remains to be seen when he will return to the pitch, after picking up an issue against Aberdeen in the previous league game.

Amidst all this, one centre-back is headed out on loan. But not before putting pen to paper on a contract extension.

Celtic make double announcement about defender

As tweeted out by Celtic, Bosun Lawal has signed a new contract which sees the defender extend his stay at the club until 2026. He has also joined Fleetwood Town on a season-long loan for the 2023/24 campaign.

The long-term contract extension suggests that Celtic rate Lawal highly and have future plans for him if his development goes according to plan. At Fleetwood Town, he will get the chance to work under the management of Parkhead legend, Scott Brown.

Broony impressed in his first season as manager and will hopefully be able to improve Lawal as a player. The English League One is a good place for the development of the defender. It will be a good introduction to senior-level football for him. If anyone has any doubts about the level, just ask how much Callum McGregor profited from his stint there.
