Celtic have been linked with a number of players in recent times. One of them is Michail Antonio of West Ham United. The Jamaican international has been a stalwart for the Hammers for several years now but could be on the move this summer. And Parkhead has been touted as a possible destination for him.

Of course, many Celtic fans are unsure about signing a 33-year-old striker, who is coming off an inconsistent campaign. Antonio struggled in the Premier League last season, but he did score six goals in the UEFA Europa Conference League, helping West Ham United win the competition.

It is hard to deny that Antonio has a lot of qualities that he could bring to the table, even if on a short-term basis. And also, Oh Hyeon-gyu picked up an injury recently that could keep him out of action for over a month. Thus, the Hoops might be in need of a striker anyway.

Amidst all this, Antonio’s past comments about the Celtic supporters have reemerged. The Hoops had taken on West Ham United in a pre-season friendly back in 2021, which was one of the first games of Ange Postecoglou’s run as the manager of the club. They had lost 6-2 on that day.

Antonio’s past comments about Celtic fans reemerge

As reported by Glasgow Live, Antonio had said:

"“I was standing a yard away from Nobes and Nobes was trying to speak to me and I couldn’t hear him, and that’s only with 18,000, so imagine if this place was full!“I’ve talked to a few people who played here and they said the atmosphere was the best they’ve ever played in so, although I’ve not experienced that, it was great to experience it anyway.”"

It remains to be seen whether Celtic do indeed end up making a move for Antonio this summer. There are both pros and cons to the move for sure.

Antonio is a proven striker at the Premier League level and has a ton of experience, something that this Celtic side lacks at the moment. At the same time, he is 33 years of age and is expected to be on big wages. To be honest, despite the rumours, a move feels pretty unlikely.
