While most of the focus has been on incomings, Celtic have seen quite a few players head out of the exit door this summer as well. The likes of Jota, Conor Hazard, Vasilis Barkas and Osaze Urhoghide have left the club on a permanent basis while Liam Shaw and Adam Montgomery have gone out on loan. And now, two more names have been added to that list.
It had become pretty clear over the past week or so that Carl Starfelt was set to leave the club. The Swede had been a regular starter throughout the Ange Postecoglou era and thus, his exit will come as a blow for sure.
The centre-back is heading for Spain. As reported by Celtic’s official website, Starfelt has left the club to join La Liga’s Celta Vigo.
He is not the only one to head out of Parkhead although the other player is only leaving on a temporary basis. As tweeted out by the club’s account, Ben McPherson has joined Queen’s Park on a season-long loan.
Celtic finally make official double exit announcement
Of course, Celtic will need to find a replacement for Starfelt. He was a key player for the team and a regular starter. The Hoops have brought in Maik Nawrocki recently but more additions might be needed in the heart of defence.
Thankfully, it looks like the process has already started for that, and a couple of centre-backs have been linked with a move to Parkhead recently. Let’s see how things play out in that regard.
As for McPherson, leaving on loan is a positive step for him. The youngster needs to be playing regular football in order to find his feet at the senior level but he is not expected to get that at Celtic yet. So, joining Queen’s Park could help him a lot.
