It will be interesting to see how the rest of the summer transfer window plays out for Celtic. To be honest, a lot of fans have been left underwhelmed by how things have transpired till now. There were a lot of expectations but a lot of them have not been met. Highly-rated young players have been brought in but more is needed, if the Hoops are to make an impact in the Champions League this time around, having failed to win a single game last season.
Carl Starfelt’s upcoming exit to Celta Vigo has certainly handed the club a new hurdle to jump over. And they are expected to sign a new centre-back soon to replace the Swede.
It remains to be seen what Starfelt’s exit means for those already at the club. One player who could be offered a fresh chance is Stephen Welsh, who impressed in pre-season. But at the same time, the club seem to be open to the idea of him leaving as well.
As reported by Football Scotland, Welsh has been told that there is a spot for him in the squad. But he would be permitted to seek first-team options elsewhere if he wants to look for more game time, which is something he is not guaranteed in Glasgow.
Celtic player told he is free to leave the club this summer
It remains to be seen how things play out. It must be said that Welsh can do a job for Celtic in the heart of defence.
He looked quite good in pre-season friendlies. And with Starfelt on his way out, there is a starting spot up for grabs.
One would expect new summer signing Maik Nawrocki to be given plenty of opportunities before someone like Welsh, who has been at the club for years. The club are rumoured to be looking to sign another centre-back too, to replace Starfelt.
