Celtic had a fantastic record of identifying and signing the right players during the time of Ange Postecoglou as manager. That does not mean that every move worked out though, especially in the latter stages of the Australian’s run at Parkhead before he ended up leaving for Tottenham Hotspur as manager.

In fact, out of the players brought to the club during the 2022/23 season, the only success stories have been Alistair Johnston and Aaron Mooy. Oh Hyeon-gyu has shown a lot of potential but it remains to be seen whether he can take the next step.

Another player who was signed last season is Yuki Kobayashi. The Japanese centre-back arrived in January and it ultimately led to the exit of Moritz Jenz, who was on loan with an option to buy.

While Jenz has impressed and earned himself a permanent move to Wolfsburg since leaving, Kobayashi has struggled to find his feet in Scottish football. So much so that there are already question marks over his future at Celtic, less than a year after his arrival.

As reported by Football Scotland, Kobayashi has opted to join CAA Base. He has left his former agency.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Kobayashi at Parkhead. There have been suggestions that he could head back to Japan on loan, similar to Yosuke Ideguchi. Time shall tell whether that will happen or not.

On the other hand, Celtic seem to be on the lookout for another centre-back with Carl Starfelt on the verge of an exit. They have already signed Maik Nawrocki from Legia Warsaw and are being linked with Gustaf Lagerbielke of IF Elfsborg and Xavier Mbuyamba of FC Volendam.

Stephen Welsh and Liam Scales put in positive displays in pre-season as well. Thus, Kobayashi might be at the bottom of the centre-back pecking order right now.
