It is no secret that Celtic could do with another goalkeeper at this point in time. Joe Hart is the number one for the Hoops at the moment and the Englishman deserves credit for the job that he has done since arriving in the summer of 2021. But at the same time, there are clear weaknesses in his game.
Hart’s performance in the opening league match against Ross County was not up to par. Celtic were lucky that the visitors did not capitalise on some of the Englishman’s mistakes on the day.
Celtic have been linked with a move for Dominik Livakovic of Dinamo Zagreb recently. There is a lot of confusion about his future though. Not too long ago, a move to Fenerbahce looked almost as good as done. But that has led nowhere since then.
There is another pretty highly-rated goalkeeper who could be available for a bargain transfer fee this summer. It is Real Madrid’s number two, Andriy Lunin.
Celtic must sign Real Madrid goalkeeper this summer
Lunin is 24 years of age and has been Thibaut Courtois’ cover for quite some time now. With just a year left on his contract, there have been rumours that Real Madrid want him to leave this summer, while the player would prefer to see out his contract.
Let’s see how things play out for Lunin at Santiago Bernabeu. He could be an excellent signing for a club like Celtic though.
Lunin might not have played much for Real Madrid, but he is one of the most highly-rated young goalkeepers in world football. And he has all the tools required to be the long-term solution for Celtic between the posts.
On the other hand, Celtic could provide Lunin the opportunity to compete for trophies on a regular basis as well as a chance to play in the Champions League. Thus, a move might make sense for all parties.
