Over the last two days, it has become pretty clear that Carl Starfelt is on his way out of Celtic Park this summer. One would expect the move to be completed over the coming week or so and Spain seems like his most likely destination at this point in time. The Swedish defender has been a regular starter for the club for two seasons now, so they must find a replacement for him.
Maik Nawrocki has been brought in and started on Flag Day. But he is just 22 years of age and playing his first season in Scotland. He needs to be given time to find his feet and placing him as a starter from the get-go would not be ideal.
The club also have Yuki Kobayashi and Stephen Welsh in their ranks, while Tomoki Iwata can play as a centre-back as well. But none of them might be good enough to start regularly, especially in the Champions League.
Rumours are doing the rounds online though that Scott McKenna is being considered as a potential replacement for the outgoing Starfelt. And most Celtic fans do not seem to be happy with the links.
Celtic fans unhappy with rumoured Starfelt replacement
McKenna is a Scottish international and plays for Nottingham Forest in the Premier League. Thus, he clearly has some pedigree and at 26 years of age, is entering his prime.
At the same time though, it is not hard to see the weaknesses in his game and why Celtic fans might not be happy with the rumours. McKenna is a good defender but struggles to play out from the back, something that he would be expected to do at Celtic.
That being said, when it comes to strictly defending, McKenna is an asset to have. He starred for Nottingham Forest in their promotion-winning campaign and has played regularly in the Premier League as well, when not injured.
