Celtic are set to take on Athletic Bilbao in the final friendly game ahead of the start of the 2023/24 campaign. It will not just be another pre-season match though. Instead, it is also going to be the testimonial of James Forrest, who has given so much to the Hoops over the years and he has certainly earned his share of the spotlight.
Forrest came through the youth ranks at Celtic and has spent his entire senior career at the club till now. The recent years have been difficult for the Scot as well.
He has struggled for form and fitness, and as a result, has no longer been a part of Celtic’s plans for the past few seasons. But Forrest has remained an invaluable member of the squad regardless and it will be great to see him get some recognition when the Hoops take on Athletic Bilbao.

Even more importantly though, they have stuck to their policy of having only players native to or trained in the Basque region. This has been important to the promotion of homegrown talent and Athletic Bilbao has produced some exceptional footballers over the years.
It will be a great occasion when Celtic welcome Athletic Bilbao to Parkhead for Forrest’s testimonial game. With just days to go to the season as well though, the Hoops will surely want a result on the day too. At the weekend, Brendan Rodgers’ side will take on Ross County on Flag Day.
