Celtic have been pretty good when it comes to identifying the right talents over the past couple of years, bringing in players such as Kyogo, Reo Hatate, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Alistair Johnston, Matt O’Riley, Daizen Maeda and several others. That was not always the case though. In fact, their recruitment in the summer transfer window of 2020 was one of the biggest reasons behind the club’s struggles that season.
Their marquee signing from that summer was Albian Ajeti. Initially, the rumours had suggested that Celtic were looking to sign the Swiss striker on a season-long loan from West Ham United. But somewhat out of the blue, the Hoops shelled out a transfer fee around £5 million to bring him to Parkhead on a permanent deal.
To be fair to Ajeti, he did make a very bright start at Celtic and was averaging a goal every 47 minutes in the league after scoring five times for the Hoops. At that point, he was top of the Premiership scoring charts as well.
It did not take long for his form to dip though. Since then, he has scored just four more times for Celtic and it is no surprise that the fans want to see him depart this summer.
Ramon Vega believes £5m Celtic signing is not a good player
As reported by The Scotsman, Ramon Vega said about Ajeti while speaking to AltIndex:
"“I don’t think he is a good player in the first place. He’s certainly not good enough to play for Celtic, he wasn’t good enough to play for West Ham and he wasn’t good enough to play for Sturm Graz. The only place where he played to a decent level was Switzerland with Basel so he should go back there. That can be the way of it sometimes. You find a place where you can play.”"
Vega himself played for the Switzerland national team on several occasions. And he spent time on loan at Celtic as well.
At the end of the day, it just does not feel like it is going to work out for Ajeti at Celtic. He might have showed a lot of promise early on in his career at FC Basel. But the Swiss striker has done nothing of note since joining West Ham United in a £8 million deal.
