Viaplay are set to drop their UK football coverage. That will have an impact on the sponsorship of Scottish football trophies, of the national team and of course on the coverage of cup matches. That isn’t helpful news for football in the country at all. Celtic fans have been given something to be positive about amidst all this though.
The Viaplay news doesn’t affect the Premiership matches and currently it is Sky who have that deal. Fans have had their complaints about the coverage in recent times though.
Former Celtic striker, Andy Walker, was involved and while he could have been a strong voice for the club and the fans, he did not manage to fill that role. Kris Boyd, on the other hand, seems to have a heavily blue tinted view of things.
Walker is no longer there, but Boyd remains. There has been more positive news for Celtic fans in particular. As reported by Sky Sports, Chris Sutton will join them from the 2023/24 cinch Premiership season, and the former Hoops striker said:
"“I can’t wait to join the Sky Sports team ahead of an exciting new cinch Premiership season.“I’m sure Kris and I will have some good discussions throughout!”"
Celtic hero sends Boyd message after Sky Sports move
It looks as though fans should be anticipating a lively relationship between the two pundits. Sutton can be pretty forthright in his views and is not afraid to speak his mind. He is not someone worried about being a bit controversial at times. Although a Celtic favourite in his time there as a player, he tends to both praise and criticise the club in equal proportions.
We will certainly get to know what’s on Sutton’s mind, be sure of that. Boyd might need to raise his game, if he wants to keep up with the Celtic hero. That should make the opening Glasgow Derby next season even more interesting.
Football coverage in Scotland over the past couple of years has been hit and miss at best. The involvement of Sutton can only be a positive, when it comes to making things more interesting.
