When Brendan Rodgers returned to Celtic for a second stint in the Parkhead hot seat, rumours broke out that the club were ready to back the Northern Irishman in the summer transfer window. Since then, they have completed the signings of Odin Thiago Holm and Marco Tilio, while it is only a matter of time before the arrivals of Yang Hyun-jun and Kwon Hyeok-kyu are officially announced as well.
All of them are very highly-rated young talents. And considering the record that the club have had when it comes to transfers in recent years, the fans will be confident that they have pulled off a few masterstrokes this time around as well.
Celtic will need to bring in some experience as well though, especially with another season coming up in the Champions League group stage. And one player who they were linked with is Jonny Evans.
Evans was a stalwart in the Leicester City side, while Brendan Rodgers was the manager of the club. So much so that he was even handed the captain’s armband last season. The defender left this summer though, after his contract ran out.
Manchester United have signed Celtic-linked defender
Celtic were linked with a move for the Premier League veteran. But instead, he seems to be headed back to Manchester United, on a short-term basis at least.
As tweeted out by Anthony Joseph, Manchester United have signed Evans on a very short-term deal. He will take part in their upcoming pre-season games in Edinburgh and San Diego.
Evans was training with Manchester United and it looks like he was impressive enough for Erik ten Hag to hand him a short-term deal. The Northern Irish defender actually came through the youth ranks at Old Trafford and made almost 200 appearances for the Red Devils before leaving for West Bromwich Albion in 2015.
