Celtic are expected to strengthen their squad this summer in preparation for another Champions League group stage campaign, while they have a treble to defend as well. There have been rumours about some marquee signings but till now, the Hoops have focused on signing highly-rated young talents.
Odin Thiago Holm and Marco Tilio have already been brought in. And a move for Yang Hyun-jun is believed to be getting closer as well.
Another super talent that Celtic were linked with recently is Carlos Borges of Manchester City. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 29 goals and provided 18 assists in 33 appearances at youth levels last season.
Those are mind-boggling numbers, especially for a winger. But that has not converted into opportunities at the senior level for Manchester City, with the Portuguese youth international yet to make his debut at the senior level for Pep Guardiola’s team. Unsurprisingly, he is being linked with a move away, with Celtic being one of the clubs rumoured to hold an interest in Borges.
Celtic suffer blow in race for Manchester City talent
Other clubs appear to be eyeing a move for the Manchester City wonderkid as well and understandably so. As reported by Football Insider, Bournemouth are ready to join the chase for Borges. The Cherries are believed to be exploring either a loan move or a permanent transfer for the Portuguese youngster.
Now, it remains to be seen what the future holds for Borges. It is uncertain whether he would even leave Manchester City this summer or not.
Borges’ current deal with Manchester City is believed to run out in the summer of 2024 though. So, it is an interesting situation for sure.
Borges has proven himself to be an elite talent at the youth levels. Thus, signing someone like him could be a major coup for Celtic. But there seem to be several other teams in the race as well.
