Ange Postecoglou makes superb Celtic claim despite leaving

Ange Postecoglou arrived at Celtic as pretty much an unknown in the European game, despite of his successes in Japan and Australia. It did not take the manager too long to become a fan favourite though and he guided the Hoops to five trophies in his two seasons in the Parkhead hot seat.

Postecoglou would leave this summer, just days after guiding Celtic to a domestic treble, in order to join Tottenham Hotspur. The decision might not have gone down well with the supporters, but one also has to recognise that at 57 years of age, he was not going to get many, if any, more opportunities to manage a Big Six Premier League club.

When the dust settles, Postecoglou will be remembered as a great manager for Celtic. He came under extremely difficult circumstances and guided the club to success quicker than anybody could have expected.

Celtic had finished 25 points behind the Rangers and trophyless in the 2020/21 campaign. Several key players also left the club that summer and the Hoops were in need of a rebuild. Postecoglou took over in that situation and won five of the next six domestic titles. An extraordinary achievement that deserves respect.

It is clear that Postecoglou has fond memories of Celtic, even though he might have left after just two seasons. As reported by BBC, he said:

"“It is a special football club and if you’ve got a bucket list as a manger of football clubs you probably want to manage that would be one of them, because the supporters are not really supporters – the club is an extension of them as a family.“We had a brilliant two years, a great group of players, great staff.”"

The Postecoglou chapter was a very successful one in the history of the club, even though it might have been short. It is time to turn the page though.

Brendan Rodgers has returned for a second stint in the Parkhead hot seat. The Northern Irishman is a proven success in the Scottish game, having won seven trophies the last time around. And hopefully, he will continue on that path as well as improving in European competitions.
