When Brendan Rodgers returned to Celtic for a second stint as manager, the reception from the support was more positive than expected, considering the circumstances in which he had left the last time around. A lot of that was of course down to the fact that he was the best option available to replace Ange Postecoglou.
Not many would have expected Rodgers to be back at Celtic, a little over four years after leaving. And one rumour that had emerged when the appointment was yet to be confirmed, was regarding the Northern Irishman’s desire to make an impact in Europe.
If there was one area in which Postecoglou failed during his run at Celtic, it was in Europe. Rodgers’ own continental record is not spectacular either. So will the club be able to take a step forward in that regard?
There seems to be a very positive update regarding the matter. As reported by GIVEMESPORT, Anthony Joseph said:
"“In my conversations with contacts and sources, they keep stressing that they really want to compete in the Champions League and make a mark in Europe. And certainly, in the new format, they feel they have the foundation and the budget to win the league this year and put themselves in that position to get that increased Champions League revenue, and the increased amount of matches and really make a mark.”"
Sky Sports man makes superb claim about Celtic plans
It will be interesting to see if Celtic are able to make their presence felt in the Champions League next season. The Hoops did put in some very good performances in the competition last year, against the likes of Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk and RB Leipzig.
But ultimately, they were not able to win a single game, being let down by their finishing time after time. That clearly shows that Celtic still some way to go if they want to compete with Europe’s best.
There have been rumours though that the club are ready to strengthen their squad significantly this summer and are even ready to shatter their transfer record. The biggest fee the club have shelled out till now was the £9 million they signed Odsonne Edouard for back in 2018. Recently, they have been linked with a £15 million move for Swiss super talent, Fabian Rieder, of BSC Young Boys.
