Celtic already have a stacked squad, although they need to bring in a proper replacement for Jota, after the Portuguese winger left for Al-Ittihad. The club are expected to make further additions over the coming weeks and months as well though, with Brendan Rodgers coming in as the new manager and he will surely want to rebuild the roster to suit his vision and plans.
One area where Celtic might need to make an addition is left-back. Greg Taylor proved to be a major success under the management of Ange Postecoglou. But there are question marks about whether he would fit Rodgers’ style of play.
On the other hand, there are major doubts over Alexandro Bernabei either. He became the first Argentine player in Celtic history last summer, when he was signed from Lanus.
But his performances on the pitch did not meet expectations. He could not even push Taylor for the starting spot.
Pundit claims Celtic first-team player is not good enough
As reported by Football Insider, Frank McAvennie said about Bernabei:
"“I think he [Rodgers] will bring someone in to push Greg because I do not think Bernabei is good enough.“I had hopes for him but I do not think he is going to do it.“Maybe Brendan [Rodgers] will be able to get the best out of him but I just think he is a bit small to get the best out of.“He did alright in a few games last season because at one point he was all over the place.“"
Bernabei arrived at Celtic last summer amid a lot of hopes and expectations but till now, it is safe to say that he has not been able to show a lot. The Argentine does have some positive attributes to his game for sure. But overall, it is hard to see him being a starter for the Hoops anytime soon.
In fact, someone like Liam Scales might have a lot more upside than him. He has at least proven that he can get the job done in the Premiership, during his time out on loan at Aberdeen.
That being said, the previous campaign was Bernabei’s first in Scotland and Europe. Thus, he perhaps deserves another season to show what he is capable of in a Celtic shirt. Rodgers will get the chance to make his own judgements about the Argentine youth international during pre-season.
