The Celtic squad could be set to undergo some changes this summer. Several key players have been linked with moves away. They also have a new manager in place in Brendan Rodgers, who will surely want to reshape the roster according to his vision. And there are a few who might not have a long-term future at Parkhead.
Celtic have no lack of talented youngsters. But some of them simply have not been able to make their mark at the senior level.
One player who falls under that category is Stephen Welsh. He has been very highly rated for a long time and played a bit of football for the first-team as well. But he has never been able to nail down his spot as a starter and finds himself towards the bottom of the centre-back pecking order right now. Thus, a move away this summer is not only possible but feels likely.
As tweeted out by Anthony Joseph, Welsh is attracting interest from Bundesliga and Serie A clubs. Rodgers will assess the squad before making decisions. Celtic did knock back offers from Udinese and Toulouse for the defender last year.
Celtic player wanted by Bundesliga and Serie A clubs
Welsh has come through the youth ranks at Celtic. Thus, fans would have wanted to see him become a regular starter for the club. But unfortunately, it does not feel like that will happen.
Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt have firmly established themselves as the starting duo in the heart of defence. The club also have Yuki Kobayashi and Tomoki Iwata capable of playing there. And the expectation is for them to sign another centre-back this summer.
Thus, Welsh’s chances of being a starter for Celtic appear to be slim to none at this point of time. So, a move away might be the right step.
